President-elect Trump has nominated Scott Bessent to lead the US Treasury Department, one of the most influential roles in government with wide oversight of tax policy, public debt, international finance and sanctions. The selection ends what has proven to be one of the more protracted decisions for the president-elect as he assembles his team for a second term. Bessent, a Wall Street financier who once worked for George Soros, was an early backer of Trump's 2024 bid and brings a relatively conventional resume to the role. The 62-year-old's nomination on Friday evening kicked-off a series of cabinet announcements and White House appointments that leaves Trump's top team almost complete ahead of his return to the presidency in January. Another excellent ACTA treasury conference. Very good calibre industry speakers offering informative insights across three themes: technology, AI and payments; ESG financing; the value of strategic treasury. Five valuable takeaways/reminders worth sharing: 1.    Treasurers today need to be more of a technologist than a risk price manager. 2.    Although the high interest in AI and machine learning to automate reporting and solve problems, most treasurers still rely heavily on MS Excel!    3.    We are now seeing the real convergence of sustainability finance and impact investment - evidenced by the increasing interaction between corporates and investors. 4.    Financing ESG initiatives using a multi-year green bond is seen as having a potentially higher risk of under-delivery against ESG targets compared to an annually-reviewed sustainability-linked facility.   5.    The best outcomes for Treasury teams, in building trust and adding value, resulted from them getting closely involved in learning about the drivers of the business, as well as helping educate the business operations on financing, risk and bank practices. Really appreciated the closing keynote from Jelena Dokic – and her elegant, determined messages on self-belief, resilience, vulnerability and the impact of someone believing in you.
