Senator Reiterates Call for Syria Sanctions Relief
While meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly High Level Week in New York City Sept. 22, Senate Foreign Relations Committee ranking member Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., “emphasized the need for Congress to pass” her bill to end a U.S. economic sanctions law targeting Syria, a Shaheen press release said.

Shaheen’s legislation, which would repeal the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act of 2019, was added this month to the Senate version of the FY 2026 National Defense Authorization Act, which is pending on the Senate floor (see 2509050056). Her proposal is intended to help Syria rebuild following last year's collapse of the Bashar Assad regime.
