Lawmaker Calls for Sanctioning Backers of Sudan Militia

Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, urged the Trump administration July 30 to sanction those providing material support to Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, which is fighting the Sudanese Armed Forces.

In a letter to Massad Boulos, the State Department's senior adviser for Africa, Wilson said that while the U.S. sanctioned the RSF’s commander in January (see 2501070024), it should also use sanctions to “remove the resources and financial pipelines available for the RSF to continue” its “genocide” against other ethnic groups. The State Department didn’t respond to a request for comment.

A bipartisan group of five senators urged the administration in May to use “all available tools” to hold foreign entities accountable for fueling Sudan’s 2-year-old civil war (see 2505120023). In response, the State Department said the administration was reviewing its Sudan policy.

In March, two House Democrats reintroduced a bill to require sanctions against those who perpetrate or enable atrocities in Sudan, block humanitarian aid to the country, or violate the U.N. arms embargo on Sudan (see 2501070068). The legislation is pending before several committees.
