Senators Back Continued Sanctioning of Venezuela

Sens. Rick Scott and Ashley Moody, both R-Fla., urged the Trump administration last week to continue using “maximum pressure,” including sanctions, to pressure Venezuela to release "wrongfully imprisoned" Americans.

In a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio July 2, the senators said that while Venezuela recently released seven Americans, at least eight others remain “unjustly detained.”

Also in the letter, the senators praised President Donald Trump’s February designation of Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua as a terrorist organization (see 2502190011). They reiterated Scott’s call in March to designate two additional Venezuelan entities -- Cartel de los Soles and the General Directorate of Military Counterintelligence, or DGCIM -- as terrorist organizations (see 2503280033).
