The Consumer Product Safety Commission is amending its regulations to adjust the scope of safety standards on cigarette lighters for inflation. As a result of this adjustment, child resistance requirements for novelty and disposable lighters apply to refillable lighters that use butane or similar fuels with a customs value or ex-factory price below $2.75. The child-resistance requirements also apply to all disposable lighters. Congress initially set the threshold at $2 in 1993 but provided for inflation increases every five years in the underlying law.
