Senate Sanctions Bill Targets Foreign Cyber Scammers
Sens. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., introduced a bill Sept. 30 that would allow the president to use International Emergency Economic Powers Act sanctions against transnational criminal organizations that conduct large-scale cyber scams targeting Americans.

Such scams, which often involve forced labor working in secure facilities known as scam compounds, "swindle Americans out of billions of dollars annually," a Cornyn press release said. The legislation is intended to build on the Trump administration’s recent efforts on the issue, including sanctions imposed on a network of Southeast Asian scam centers in September (see 2509080010).
The Scam Compound Accountability and Mobilization Act was referred to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
