NENA: Agreement Emerging on Parts of NG911 Rules

Consensus is emerging among public safety groups on some issues as the FCC considers rules for next-generation 911, the National Emergency Number Association said in reply comments Monday in docket 21-479. Replies are due Wednesday on a Further NPRM that commissioners approved 4-0 in March (see 2503270042).

Only elements “critical to the call path” should be considered covered service provider (CSP) elements, NENA said. “As NENA and others note in their initial filings, there is broad consensus on this matter.” As an example, the group cited geographic information system (GIS) elements, which it said shouldn’t be included because GIS isn’t used “as part of a real time call flow."

NENA also said rules shouldn’t require the use of technologies in draft standards before they’re finalized. “In good faith, NENA provided examples of elements that could be considered CSP elements in the future” but didn’t “intend for such technologies to be considered in proposed rules as requirements at this time.”
