US Sanctions Sudanese Official, Militia for Inflaming Civil War
The Office of Foreign Assets Control last week sanctioned Gebreil Ibrahim Mohamed Fediel and the Al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade for their ties both to Sudan’s civil war and Iran.

OFAC said Fediel is Sudan’s finance minister and chair of the Justice and Equality Movement, an armed group with links to Hassan al Turabi, the "architect of Sudan’s Islamist revolution," which has caused the deaths and displacement of thousands of Sudanese civilians. OFAC also said Fediel has worked with the Iranian government "with the intent of strengthening political and economic ties."
The agency sanctioned the Al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade for being a Sudan-based Islamist militia that has contributed 20,000 fighters in support of the country's civil war, using training and weapons provided by the Iranian military. The group and its fighters are a "significant impediment to ending the civil war in Sudan" and they undermine "efforts to resolve the conflict," OFAC said.
