Senator Pushes Bill to Label Muslim Brotherhood a Terrorist Group
Senate Foreign Relations Committee member Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said Sept. 10 that he’s working to increase support for his bill to require the executive branch to designate the Egypt-based Muslim Brotherhood a Foreign Terrorist Organization.

Cruz told the Heritage Foundation that the Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act would need 60 votes to pass the Senate, so it would require bipartisan backing. Currently, the legislation has nine Senate co-sponsors, all Republican.
Cruz and Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., reintroduced the bill in July, citing the Muslim Brotherhood’s support for violent extremist groups, including Gaza-based Hamas (see 2507170001). The House version has 15 co-sponsors, including four Democrats.
