Bill Would Allow CFIUS to Probe Foreign Purchases of Land Near Key Infrastructure
Rep. Chris Pappas, D-N.H., introduced a bill Sept. 9 that would authorize the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. to review and block foreign purchases of American real estate located near critical infrastructure, including drinking water facilities.

“Allowing adversaries like China to have free rein over our land, particularly near our critical infrastructure facilities, is a major national security risk," said Rep. Randy Weber, R-Texas, who is co-sponsoring the legislation. Giving CFIUS "the authority to review these purchases counters our adversaries’ plots to weaken our nation and improves our ability to protect our way of life.”
The Critical Infrastructure Security Act, which also is co-sponsored by Rep. Maggie Goodlander, D-N.H., was referred to the House Financial Services, Energy and Commerce, and Foreign Affairs committees.
