Senate Bill Could Lead to Sanctions for Deporting Uyghurs to China
Sens. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., and John Cornyn, R-Texas, introduced a bill July 29 that would direct the Office of Foreign Assets Control to determine whether to sanction foreign officials involved in the forced deportation of Uyghurs and other “at-risk individuals” to China, according to a Merkley press release.

The release says that Thailand’s return of at least 40 Uyghur refugees to China in February is a human rights violation because they will likely face persecution (see 2502270069). U.S. lawmakers had urged Thailand not to proceed with the deportation (see 2502260034).
The Preventing the Forced Return of Uyghurs Act was referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
