Senator Renews Bill to Restrict Chinese Ownership of US Land

Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., announced July 10 that he has reintroduced a bill that would bar Chinese corporations and individuals associated with the Chinese Communist Party from owning American agricultural land and homes.

The Protecting Our Farms and Homes from China Act also would require Chinese government-linked corporations and individuals to divest ownership of U.S. agricultural land and residential real estate within a year.

“China’s ownership of U.S. farmland poses a direct threat to American interests," Hawley said in a press release. "We should never let our nation’s greatest adversary have access to our vital resources, including our housing supply."

Hawley’s action came two days after the Trump administration announced plans to pursue legislative and executive action to ban purchases of American farmland by China and other foreign “adversaries” (see 2507090003).
