White House: Chinese Purchases of Iranian Oil Still Subject to Sanctions Despite Trump Comment
Chinese purchases of Iranian oil will continue to be subject to U.S. sanctions despite President Donald Trump saying June 24 that China can now buy Iranian oil (see 2506240049), a senior White House official said.

“The President was simply calling attention to the fact that, because of his decisive actions to obliterate Iran’s nuclear facilities and broker a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, the Strait of Hormuz will not be impacted, which would have been devastating for China," the official said in an email late June 24. "The President continues to call on China and all countries to import our state-of-the-art oil rather than import Iranian oil in violation of U.S. sanctions.”
The official's comments came hours after Trump wrote on Truth Social: "China can now continue to purchase Oil from Iran. Hopefully, they will be purchasing plenty from the U.S., also. It was my Great Honor to make this happen!" Trump made the announcement after declaring that Iran and Israel agreed to a ceasefire following 12 days of fighting.
