China Select Committee Chair Urges Trump to Enforce TikTok Divestiture Law

House Select Committee on China Chairman Rep. John Moolenaar, R-Mich., called on the Trump administration June 23 to enforce a 2024 law that requires China’s ByteDance to sell TikTok or face a U.S. ban on the popular social media application.

"The law is clear: ByteDance must divest or TikTok should go dark,” Moolenaar said in an emailed statement. "Every day the app stays live under [Chinese Communist Party] control is another day Beijing can exploit American [users'] data and manipulate our information space" by spreading anti-U.S. propaganda.

Moolenaar’s comments came four days after President Donald Trump signed an executive order giving ByteDance an additional 90 days to comply with the divestiture requirement. The extension is the third since January (see 2506200040).
