Trump had already given ByteDance two 75-day extensions to comply with a 2024 law that requires the company to sell TikTok (see 2504040062). The law is intended to address concerns that the Chinese government could use TikTok to spread anti-U.S. propaganda and gain access to U.S. users' personal information. Trump has said he wants a resolution that protects national security while preserving the platform (see 2501210051).

Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., criticized the latest deadline extension, saying Trump is “flouting” the law. Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., also objected, saying Trump is allowing “this national security issue to fester.” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the move, saying the “White House Counsel's office and the Department of Justice strongly believe in the legal rationale for this executive order.”
