The labor union issued its plea after Reuters reported that the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. completed its second review of the acquisition and submitted its undisclosed findings to Trump for his consideration. The White House and the Treasury Department didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

Trump, who ordered the review in early April, asked CFIUS to examine whether Nippon Steel could propose measures to mitigate “any national security risks” related to the purchase (see 2504070015). After CFIUS finished its original review in late 2024, the Biden administration moved to block the deal, saying U.S. Steel should remain in domestic hands (see 2501030009 and 2412240035).
