The “partnership between China and Belarus has been continuously deepened, bilateral economic and trade cooperation has developed healthily and steadily, [and] the scale of trade has continued to expand," China’s Ministry of Commerce said, according to an unofficial translation of its readout of the meeting. The ministry added that it’s “willing to strengthen position coordination with Belarus, jointly oppose protectionism, unilateralism and the United States' abuse of tariffs and bullying, safeguard the multilateral trading system and international fairness and justice, and maintain the security and stability of the two countries' domestic supply chains.”

The U.S. and many of its Western and Asian allies have imposed broad sanctions against Belarus for its support of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

The meeting came the same week Chinese President Xi Jinping was scheduled to visit Moscow and meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where the two leaders planned to build “mutual trust” and “promote practical cooperation in various fields, bring more benefits to the two peoples, and contribute more stability and positive energy to the international community,” a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said, according to a release from the Chinese Embassy in Washington.
