New Street: Trump Permitting Order May Have Limited Implications for ISPs
New Street’s Blair Levin told investors that the broadband implications of President Donald Trump's recent executive order on permitting reform remain to be seen (see 2504180036). The order “says that the purpose is to improve the permitting processes for ‘infrastructure projects of all kinds, such as roads, bridges, mines, factories, power plants, and others,’” Levin said last week: “While broadband is not mentioned, it could be included in the category of ‘others.’”

Levin noted that the order doesn’t mention data centers, “but we would not be surprised to learn that data centers were a focus, and that would lead to permitting related to enabling broadband connectivity between the data centers and other locations.” There’s also no mention of permitting on federal lands, state or local permitting, and pole attachments, he said. The order “appears primarily concerned about environmental regulations,” Levin added: “While we don’t believe those are the primary concerns related to ISPs and deployment, those regulations have been an issue in some deployments.”
