House Bill Reintroduced to Curb Exports of Drone Parts to Iran

Rep. Bill Keating, D-Mass., reintroduced a bill March 31 aimed at preventing Iran from obtaining U.S. and allied technology that could be used to make unmanned aircraft.

The Block the Use of Transatlantic Technology in Iranian Made Drones Act would require the Commerce Department to develop a strategy to supplement existing drone-related sanctions against Iran. The State Department would have to develop a strategy to encourage European and Asian allies to block drone technology exports to Iran.

The legislation, which is co-sponsored by Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., was referred to the House Foreign Affairs and Armed Services committees. The Foreign Affairs Committee approved the bill unanimously in the last Congress. Proponents of the proposal have said that despite the imposition of significant sanctions, Western technology has continued to end up in Iranian drones.
