Canada Issues New Iran, Myanmar Sanctions Designations

Canada last week announced new sanctions against people and entities for either helping Iran acquire controlled technology or having ties to human rights violations committed by the Myanmar military regime.

The Iran sanctions target three businesspeople and four companies connected to procurement networks that Iran uses to “acquire and supply sophisticated technology” for its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ weapons production and sales, Canada said, including to Russia. The designations name Hossein Hatefi Ardakani, Mehdi Gogerdchian, Hossein Pourfarzaneh, Kavan Electronics Behrad LLC, Basamad Electronic Pouya Engineering LLC, Teyf Tadbir Engineering Co. and Farzanegan Propulsion Systems Design Bureau.

The Myanmar sanctions target 13 people and three entities involved with “gross and systematic human rights violations” by Myanmar’s Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces. Canada sanctioned Ba Shwe, Kan Zaw, Ko Ko Hlaing, Lu Mon, Aung Kyaw Tun, Aung Myaing, Ko Lay, Than Than Linn, Min Htut, Khun Thant Zaw Htoo, Moe Aung, Htin Kyaw Thu, Aung Kyaw Hoe, the Ministry of Defense of Myanmar, the Armed Forces of Myanmar and the 33rd Light Infantry Division of the Burmese Army.
