Lawmakers Renew Push to Halt Arms Sales to UAE
Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., and Rep. Sara Jacobs, D-Calif., said Jan. 24 that they plan to revive their effort to block offensive arms transfers to the United Arab Emirates until the country stops providing weapons to Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia group.

The lawmakers said they recently learned that the UAE continues to arm the RSF despite assuring the Biden administration in December that it would stop doing so (see 2412190058).
Those assurances came after the lawmakers introduced a joint resolution of disapproval in November to block a $1.2 billion arms sale to the UAE, saying the country's support for the RSF was perpetuating Sudan’s civil war (see 2411220003). With that weapons shipment now believed to be underway, the lawmakers intend to reintroduce their legislation when they learn of a future sale to the UAE.
