Sudan Sanctions Backer to Meet With Secretary of State Nominee

Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., a proponent of imposing more sanctions in response to Sudan’s civil war, said Nov. 29 that he plans to meet the week of Dec. 2 with Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to be secretary of state, to discuss several topics, including Sudan.

Smith, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs human rights subcommittee, told Export Compliance Daily he expects the incoming Trump administration will be “very much engaged” on Sudan. “Marco Rubio gets it,” he said.

Smith urged the Biden administration in October to impose “robust” sanctions on the leaders of Sudan’s two warring parties for what his office called “gross violations of internationally recognized human rights” (see 2410080034).
