Bipartisan House Bill Proposes Sanctioning Iran’s Judiciary for Crackdown on Dissent

Rep. Young Kim, R-Calif., announced May 31 that she and three other House members have introduced a bill that would sanction Iranian judges, prosecutors and investigators for their ongoing persecution of peaceful protesters.

The Targeting Oppressive Officers to Mitigate Abuse in the Iranian Judiciary (TOOMAJ) Act is co-sponsored by Reps. Adam Schiff, D-Calif.; Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., and David Trone, D-Md.

The bill is named after Toomaj Salehi, an Iranian rapper and political dissident who was recently sentenced to death for speaking out about his government’s human rights violations.
