House Bill Could Sanction Russians for Endangering Ukrainian Nuclear Plant
Rep. Gregory Meeks, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, introduced a bill last week that could lead to sanctions on any person or entity “endangering” the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine. “Russia’s brutal and illegal invasion of Ukraine is now threatening nuclear catastrophe across the region,” Meeks said. “This bill would place sanctions on Russia’s nuclear agency, Rosatom, which has financially supported the war in Ukraine, as well as any who’ve undermined the nuclear facility’s safety.”
The bill is co-sponsored by Reps. Marcy Kaptur, D-Ohio; Frank Pallone, D-N.J.; Steve Cohen, D-Tenn.; Gerry Connolly, D-Va.; Bill Keating, D-Mass.; Susan Wild, D-Pa.; Colin Allred, D-Texas; Brendan Boyle, D-Pa.; and Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz. The bill’s text wasn’t immediately available.
