G-7 Trade Officials Vow 'Strong' Export Control Enforcement
G-7 trade ministers stressed the importance of export controls this week and said they will continue to work together to counter evasion tactics. The countries, including the U.S., Japan, Germany, the U.K., France, Italy and Canada, said export controls are a “fundamental policy tool to address the challenges posed by the diversion of technology critical to military applications,” adding that they “continue to work with other states” to strengthen the restrictions.

“We reiterate that strong enforcement to counter evasion of export controls is an essential element and we will continue to cooperate on this issue,” the trade ministers said in a joint statement released after their April 4 meeting. They also said they “affirm the importance of cooperation on export controls” on critical and emerging technologies, mentioning “microelectronics and cyber surveillance systems,” to address the “misuse of such technologies by malicious actors and inappropriate transfers of such technologies through research activities.”
