OFAC Targets Mexican Fentanyl Traffickers
The Office of Foreign Assets Control designated La Nueva Familia Michoacana and its co-leaders, Johnny Hurtado Olascoaga and Jose Alfredo Hurtado Olascoaga, for smuggling drugs "into and throughout" the U.S., including the proliferation of "rainbow fentanyl," according to a Nov. 17 news release.

La Nueva Familia Michoacana is the successor to the La Familia Michoacana, which was designated in 2009. The group is active in 35 Mexican municipalities across several Mexican states and is expanding into other regions of Mexico, OFAC said. Beyond fentanyl, the group is involved in trafficking various drugs from Central America, including methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine and fentanyl, all destined for the U.S.
