US, UK Issue New Nicaragua Designations
The U.S. and the United Kingdom announced new sanctions against Nicaragua Nov. 15 for human rights violations or actions that have undermined democracy in the country. The U.S. designated nine government officials and one government entity, while the U.K. sanctioned eight government officials.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned the Public Ministry of Nicaragua as well as Luis Angel Montenegro Espinoza, Jose Adrian Chavarria Montenegro, Rodolfo Francisco Lopez Gutierrez, Jose Antonio Castaneda Mendez, Mohamed Farrara Lashtar, Salvador Mansell Castrillo, Sadrach Zeledon Rocha, Leonidas Centeno Rivera and Francisco Ramon Valenzuela Blandon, all of whom helped the Daniel Ortega regime “alter and corrupt the election process in Nicaragua.”
The U.K.’s Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation designated Lumberto Ignacio Campbell Hooker, Fidel de Jesus Dominguez Alvarez, Ana Julia Guido Ochoa, Fidel Antonio Moreno Briones, Rosario Maria Murillo Zambrana, Gustavo Eduardo Porras Cortes, Alba Luz Ramos Vanegas and Juan Antonio Valle Valle. All eight are senior Nicaraguan officials who also contributed to the country’s illegitimate presidential elections or undermined “democracy and the rule of law.”
